Longhorn Football – Loss in Fort Worth & a Bye Week

Daylight Savings Time Ends

Hard to believe it is November.  And time to set our clocks back Saturday night.  Which reminded me of one of my favorite songs from college, “Turn Back the Hands of Time”, by Tyrone Davis.

Texas Longhorns Volleyball

After the win last week over BU, the volleyball team went to Lawrence and swept the Jayhawks 3-0.  They ascended to No. 1 in the AVCA poll.  And then Wednesday night they swept the Sand Aggies in Lubbock.  They play West Virginia at Gregory Gym this Sunday at Noon.

Texas Longhorns 27, Texas Christian Horned Frogs 37

The football team’s trip to Fort Worth went poorly.  Several readers commented that I didn’t have a score prediction in last week’s newsletter.  Well, good observation.  When I finished the letter in the early hours of Friday morning, I didn’t have a great feel about the game.  The injuries, the strength of the Horned Frog defense, our historically bad record against Patterson.  As I cleaned up the newsletter for posting to the blog, and after a query from a friendly Frog, I decided that Texas would indeed win the game, and my posted missive had Texas winning 33-24.  I was right the first time.  Unfortunately.

It was a really tough game.  More below.

And it was a tough weekend for the family on the gridiron, with Virginia getting beat by Louisvile and Michigan woodshedding the Irish.

World Series

Congratulations to the Washington Nationals on winning a wild World Series.  As we all know, first time ever that the road team has ever won every game.  Special congrats to Lifetime Longhorn, catcher Tres Barrera, who was on the Nats WS 40 Man roster and got to be there in uniform.  Eagle Pass native Tres gets a ring at age 25 after being drafted in 2016 by the Nats in the Sixth Round.

Very disappointing for so many of us, especially form my friends who are life-long Astros fans.  Yes, I am a Cubs fan first, but I was pulling for the Astros.  Such a bitter loss.  But as Twitter pointed out Wednesday night, at least Hinch kept Cole’s arm rested and ready for Game 8.

One nice story line of this World Series was the number of college players on the teams and among starters.  Houston’s 25 man roster included these former collegians:  Gerrit Cole, who played at UCLA; Alex Bregman, a great LSU Tiger and superb third baseman; George Springer, a U Conn Husky; and Justin Verlander, who played at Old Dominion; plus Chris Devinski from Cal State Fullerton, Will Harris from LSU, and Joe Smith from Wright State.   The Nationals were really loaded, especially at pitcher.  The Washington 25 man roster had pitchers Max Scherzer (Missouri), Steven Strasburg (San Diego State), Sean Doolittle (Virginia), and Daniel Hudson (Old Dominion), and position players Anthony Rendon (Rice), Kurt Suzuki (Fullerton), Ryan Zimmerman (Virginia), Matt Adams (Slippery Rock!), Adam Eaton (Miami Ohio), Brian Dozier (Southern Miss), Yan Gomes (Barry), and Trea Turner (NC State).  Basically most of their starters.  The 40 man rosters between the two teams accounted for another ten collegians.

So the next time you are talking to a young man who is thinking about forgoing a scholarship offer to play college ball, especially Division I, you might tell him to do some research unless it is really great money.  I love college baseball.

Good Stuff

I have written of Michael Shaw before.  He is one of the nicest guys in Austin, and he spreads cheer and makes everyone he meets happier and better.  A UT student tweeted this video of Mr. Shaw greeting her there at Whitis and 24th, President Fenves re-tweeted it, and as of Thursday night late, it had over 334,000 views.  God Bless Michael Shaw!

If  you missed the story earlier this year:

The Seal of The University of Texas is one of my favorites (no farmers spreading seed, for starters), and Jim Nicar has a good history of it here.  This is worth your time (one on left below was an early draft).

Longhorns 27, Horned Frogs 37

No detailed review this week. Could not bring myself to do it.  Just a very sad loss when a win could have meant so much.  After the OU loss and the Kansas squeaker, the refrain was that everything we had to play for was still in front of us, with one loss the Big 12 Championship Game was still in reach, etc.  Technically it still is.  Texas could still get there, and with the other upsets last weekend, the only team in the driver’s seat is at the intersection of Interstate 35 and the Brazos River (their escape from an upset at the hands of West Virginia last night keeps BU undefeated and atop the Big XII).  But the hard cold truth is we have some tough games left, and unless the Longhorns make some significant improvement, it is going to be a challenge to run the table at this point.

Some observations, in no particular order:

When Texas took the 17-10 lead in the second quarter, I really thought it might be okay.  But allowing them to drive from their own 6 yard line with 64 seconds left in the half and get a field goal and to shift momentum was big.

Gary Patterson knows how to beat us, and he uses that knowledge to win the games.  I say it that way intentionally, because he is both a good preparation coach and a good game coach, and he is now 6-2 against the Texas Longhorns in Big 12 play.

Our special teams must improve, immediately.  One return for minus 7 yards, keeping Texas at dead last in the country.  Bujcevski injured on a fake punt (maybe he had an option there, don’t know).  A positive was that after Bujcevski went out, Chris Naggar’s one punt was a boomer, 54 yards, to the TCU 19.  Texas had one kickoff return for 20 yards, while Texas Christian got to return 3 for 68 yards.

Seven penalties for 72 yards.  Texas is ranked 104th nationally and 9th in the Big XII with 58 penalties.  Texas has lost 508 yards in 8 games, basically averaging a decent offensive drive (63.5 yards) per game.

I think this was an anomaly.  But the four interceptions were problematic.  First resulted in a field goal, second was answered the way turnovers should be (a quick strike, Duggan to Reagor, for 44 yards and the TD), and the third pick led to another field goal (TCU went up 30-20 early in the fourth with that).  Still not sure what happened, because Sam completed some beautiful passes, like the 43 yard touchdown pass to Duvernay.  And best I can tell, 2 of the picks were not Sam’s fault.  Anyway, as you know I don’t like criticizing players and I am not picking on Sam.  Just a fact that four interceptions really hurt us.  I am still a huge Sam Ehlinger fan, and we have won a lot of games the past couple of years because of him and in spite of other deficiencies on the team and plans.

I know Ingram is running better, but what happened to Johnson in Fort Worth?  5 touches for 9 yards?

Going into the game, Duggan had run for 161 yards all year.  He ran for 72 last Saturday to lead the Frogs.  We have more mobile quarterbacks on the schedule ahead.

This “coverage” was on third and 17 from the 24 yard line.  The pass was completed for a touchdown, and Texas Christian went up 10-3.

On a positive note, I thought Sam was more willing to take advantage of holes and seams and run the ball, and it was almost always positive (and important) yards.

Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson had great games, accounting for 15 of the 22 Texas receptions.  8 catches for 173 yards for Duvernay; 7 catches for 101 yards for Johnson.  We can build on that, and we should.

Malcolm Roach had a good game, with 4 TFLs for 11 yards and sack.  Brandon Jones led the team with 11 tackles, and Ossai had 10 tackles.  Unfortunately the defensive stats include tackles by Devin Duvernay, Jake Smith, Cameron Dicker, and Reese Leitao.

In defense of our defense, some of the passes and catches between Duggan and his receivers were really, really great plays.  Perfect passes and incredible catches.

Polls – Week 10

Congratulations to Louisiana State moving to the top spot in the AP poll.  As my friend Paul Workman noted at lunch Wednesday, if they hold on to that spot, when the Tigers and Texas Agricultural & Mechanical meet on November 30 in Baton Rouge, it will be the aggies’ third game this year against the No. 1 team in FBS.  Lots of other shake-up with the Land Thief and Irish losses.

AP Top 25:  Louisiana State, Alabama, The Ohio State University™, Clemson, PSU, Florida, Oregon, Georgia, Utah, Land Thieves.  Baylor up to 12, and the Southern Methodists are up to 15.  Notre Dame drops to 16.  K State in at 22.  Texas “first out”, receiving 49 votes.

Coaches Poll:  Roll Tide, Bayou Bengals, Dabo Tigers, The Ohio State University™, PSU, Go Gata, UGA, Ducks, Land Thieves, Utes.  Brazos Baptists at 11, Southern Methodists at 14, L’Université de Notre Dame du Lac down to 16.  Texas still ranked at No. 24 (thanks Coaches) and K State in at No. 25.

This Week in College Football
Big XII Week X

Thursday night a big game on the banks of the Brazos in Waco.  West Virginia and Baylor, and the Mountaineers nearly got the upset.  17-14 BU over WVU.

The Sunflower Showdown.  No. 22 K State in Lawrence to play Miles & the Jayhawks.  2:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1.  Wildcats favored by 6, and the over/under is 55.

Only other game is Texas Christian at Oklahoma State.  2:30 p.m. on ESPN from Boone Pickens Stadium.  Okie A&M favored by 2.5.  Over/under is 58.  Frogs beat the Horns, and they go on the road to play the Cowboys (5-3, but 2-3 in Bit 12) and they are underdogs.  Oh my.  I have no idea how this goes.  The Big 12 is a mess.

The Land Thieves get the week off too, I am sure a welcome break for Riley and his team as they lick their wounds.  Tis a pity.

Top 25 – Week 10

Thursday Night

Georgia Southern went to Boone, North Carolina to face No. 20 and undefeated Appalachian State.  Mountaineers were favored by 15, and but for 14 points from App State in the fourth quarter, the Eagles would have doubled the line.  Final was GSU 24, App State 21.  By the way, the over/under was 44.

Saturday

No. 14 Michigan heads to Maryland to play the Terps.  11:00 a.m. on ABC.  Wolverines favored by 21.5, and the over/under is 55.5.  Maryland has one win in the Big 10 (Rutgers, which hardly counts).  Big Blue to win and cover.

No. 23 Wake Forest (6-1, 2-1) hosts North Carolina State (4-3, 1-2) in Winston-Salem.  11:00 a.m. on ESPN.  Demon Deacons favored by 7.5, and the over/under is 61.5.  I like Wake in this one.

No. 16 Notre Dame at home with the Hokies.  1:30 p.m. on NBC.  Irish favored by 17.5 over Virginia Tech.  Over/under is 58.  I am pretty confident Notre Dame will rebound and win.  Not sure about the cover.

The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party!  No. 8 Georgia and No. 6 Florida meeting in Jacksonville to play football and 100,000 or so people also meeting there to have cocktails.  The game is at 2:30 on the Columbia Broadcasting System.  Bulldogs favored by 6.5, and the over/under is 45.

Technically, this is not a bye week for Clemson.  But the No. 3 Tigers have Wofford at home in Memorial Stadium.  3:00 p.m. on ACC Network.  ESPN didn’t list a line, but I found a Vegas line at Clemson -46.5.

No. 9 Utah (7-1, 4-1) at Washington (5-3, 2-3), 3:00 p.m. on FOX from Husky Stadium in Seattle.  Utes narrow 3 point road favorites; over/under is 48.  Betting this a good game.  Utes to win.

Hotty Toddy!  Ole Miss (3-5, 2-3) at No. 11 Auburn (6-2, 3-2).  Crazy to think that if the Rebs can pull off the road upset they will have the same conference record as Auburn.  6:00 p.m. on ESPN.  War Eagle favored by 19.5, over/under is 53.  Are you ready?

No. 17 Cincinnati at East Carolina in Greenville North Carolina.  6:00 p.m. on CBS SN.  Bearcats favored by 24, over/under is 48.  Cinci to win, but the Pirates cover.

Big, big game in Memphis!  No. 15 and undefeated Southern Methodist vs. No. 24 Memphis (7-1, 3-1).  6:30 p.m. on ABC.  Vegas has the Tigers favored by 6 over the Mustangs.  Over/under is 72.  I would be surprised if the Ponies lost, but I would just take SMU and the points.

No. 7 Oregon (7-1, 5-0) at Southern Cal (5-3, 4-1).  7:00 p.m. on FOX from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.  Good game.  Ducks favored by 4.5, over/under is 62.5.

No. 21 Boise State at San Jose State.  9:30 p.m. on CBSSN.  BSU favored by 17 over SJSU.  O/U is 59.5.

Other Games of Interest This Week

Friday Night.

Navy at U Conn.  7:00 p.m. on ESPN2.  Midshipmen favored by 27.5, over/under is 54.

Saturday

UT San Antonio in College Station to play Texas Agricultural & Mechanical.  11:00 a.m. on $EC Network.  Aggy favored by 38 over the 3-4 Roadrunners.

Marshall (5-3, 3-1) at Rice (0-8, 0-4).  2:30 p.m. at Rice Stadium. Tough year for the Owls.  Won’t be any better against the Thundering Herd.  Marshall favored by just 11, over/under is 48.5.

UTEP at North Texas.  2:30 p.m. on the NFL Channel?  Why?  UNT favored by 23, Over/under is 59.5

Army (3-5) at Air Force (6-2).  2:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.  Falcons favored by 16, and the over/under is 45.

Texas State at Louisiana Lafayette.  4:00 p.m. at Cajun Field.  What a civilized time for a game.  Nice day of tailgating, and you can be home for a late dinner.  Bobcats are 22.5 point road dogs.

Virginia (5-3, 3-2) at North Carolina (4-4, 3-2).  6:30 p.m. on ACC Network.  Coach, you know I’ve been pulling for you, but got to go with family.  Tarheels are 2 point favorites, over/under is 47.  Go Hoos!

Colorado at UC Los Angeles.  8:00 p.m. on PAC 12 Network.  Bruins favored by 6.5.

Brigham Young (3-4) at Utah State (4-3), 9:00 p.m. on ESPN2.  Brigham Young 3 point underdogs.  Might be an interesting game.

The late game not a great game.  New Mexico (2-6, 0-4) at Nevada (4-4, 1-3), 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.  Wolfpack favored by 3.5.

Last Week in College Football
Big XII – Week IX

I didn’t really make any type of prediction about the Land Thieves game with Kansas State.  Oklahoma was favored by 23.5 points, and Wildcats were 1-2 in Big 12 play.  This looked to be such a gimme I didn’t think twice.  Well, one of those days.  24-23 K State at half, but then Kansas State exploded in the third with 17 points to take a 41-23 lead to the fourth quarter.  The Wildcats withstood a furious Land Thief rally of 18 points, and held on to win 48-41.  Hurts had a big day in the loss, 395 in the air and a score and rushed for 96 with 3 scores.  K State’s quarterback, Skylar Thompson, ran for four scores.  Wildcats held Sermon to 9 yards and Brooks to 2.  That was some defense.  Highlights in case you missed them.  An entertaining game:

http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=27934863&t=00m02s

Oklahoma State was a 10.5 point road dog in Ames, and I had Iowa State to win and Okie Aggies to cover.  Cover they did, taking down Iowa State 34-27.  Brock Purdy attempted 62 passes – completed 39 and had 1 TD.   Unfortunately, he completed 3 passes to Okie aggies, with those 3 picks coming late, I believe on the last 4 Cyclone drives.

And completing the day for the conference of upsets, Kansas took down Texas Technical 37-34.  KU’s QB Carter Stanley, who had a nice game against Texas, went off on the Sand Aggies.  26-37 for 415 yards and 3 scores, and the Jayhawks won with Pooka only rushing for 69.  “Might be another shootout!”  I was kind of kidding.

Top 25

Thursday Night

Southern Methodist stayed undefeated with their 34-31 win over the Cougars.

Saturday

Alabama kept Arkansas winless in SEC action, 48-7.  Roll Tide covered.

Good ball game in Baton Rouge, as Ed Orgeron’s Tigers edged Gus Malzahn’s Tigers 23-20.  A win good enough in AP voters minds to move Louisiana State ahead of Alabama.  Auburn covered.

The Ohio State University™ spanked the Badgers, 38-7.  Buckeyes are really good.

Clemson had no trouble with Boston College, cruising to a 59-7 win.

PSU is really good, and Michigan State is not.  28-7 Penitentiary Lions over Sparty.

How much can I miss by?  How about “Notre Dame wins by 10”?  Michigan 45-14 over the Irish.  Still surprised.

Washington State gave Oregon a better game than I anticipated, so good Oregon had to kick and make a last second field goal to beat the Cougars.  37-35 Ducks, and the Pirate is 1-4 in conference.

Utah shutout Cal, 35-0. Utes are good.

I made note of the over/under in the Iowa-Northwestern game (it was thirty-seven).  Vegas knows.  Iowa 20, Northwestern zero.

Minnesota shellacked Maryland, 52-10.  Big cover of the 16.5 line.

Appalachian State 30-3 over South Alabama.

Arizona State at UC Los Angeles, and I thought the Sun Devils by 3 was low.  Glad I wasn’t betting.  Bruins 42-32 over Arizona State.

Other Games of Interest

Friday night, Southern Cal 35-31 over Colorado.  Buffs covered.

Saturday

Virginia lost to Louisvile, 21-28.

The North Dakota State Bison beat the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 23-16 to remain undefeated.

San Jose State with a 34-29 win over Army.

Navy 41-38 over Tulane.

Air Force 31-7 over Utah State.

Louisiana Tech doubled up UTEP 42-21.  Line was LT by 20.5.

Texas Agricultural & Mechanical got above .500 in SEC play with a 49-30 win over Mississippi State.

Oh Rice.  6-20 losers at home to Southern Mississippi.  Didn’t even cover.

North Carolina hit a three pointer to beat Duke 20-17.  Congrats Coach Brown.  Line was Heels by 3.

Arkansas State 38-14 over Texas State.  Tough year for the Bobcats.

Northern Illinois Huskies 49, Akron Zips zip (love that one).

Miami Redhawks 23-16 over Kent State (as 2.5 point road dogs).  What a win for Miami.

Texas Basketball

The season opens next Tuesday, November 5, with Northern Colorado.  7:00 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.

Texas Baseball

The Horns won a 16 inning scrimmage against McLennan Community College last Sunday, 8-7

The Horns have a match with San Jacinto College at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday.

IVY LEAGUE REPORT FOR WEEK 6 (November 1-2, 2019)

By Lonnie Schooler

I was up late Tuesday night attending World Series Game 6, and am now observing a brief period of mourning, still flabbergasted that neither team could win a home game.  Anyway, back to business.  The Ivy League continues league play in earnest, with all teams now concentrating on playing League opponents through the rest of the season.  Anyway, here are results from Week 6 and the schedule for Week 7.

GAMES ON OCTOBER 25-26:

The League co-leader, Dartmouth hosted the Columbia Lions, on Friday night in a nationally televised game, and had little trouble defeating the Lions, 59-24, after jumping out to a 38-10 half time lead.

On Saturday, in a contest between unbeatens, the Harvard Crimson journeyed to New Jersey to do battle with the Prince-ton Tigers.  In a very close and competitive contest, the Tigers took advantage of over 300 yards passing from Quarterback Kevin Davidson and over 100 yards rushing from Collin Eaddy to prevail, 30-24.  Princeton is now undefeated on the season, and has a winning streak of 16 games at this point.

The Brown Bruins traveled to Ithaca, New York, to confront the Big Red of Cornell, in a battle of cellar dwellers.  Cornell pre-vailed, 37-35, despite almost 375 yards of passing by Brown QB Ed Perry.  Cornell scored a last minute field goal to overcome the Bruins’ frenetic rally in the second half.

Finally, the Yale Bulldogs hosted the Fighting Quakers of Penn in New Haven.  In by far the most entertaining game of the day, the Bulldogs prevailed 46-41.  In this seesaw battle, the teams were tied at 20-20 in the early third quarter, then Penn went ahead, 27-26 late in the third quarter.  Yale bore down in the 4th quarter, however, taking a commanding 46-34 lead.  Penn narrowed the gap in the last couple of minutes, but could not threaten again before time expired.  The two teams scored a combined 54 points in the second half alone, and the two starting quarterbacks amassed almost 800 yards passing combined!

At this stage, Dartmouth and Princeton remain tied atop the League with “3-0” records.

GAMES ON NOVEMBER 1-2.

All times are CDT.

On Friday evening, co-leader Princeton travels to Ithaca, New York to take on the Big Red of Cornell (5:00 P.M.)  The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

On Saturday, the Penn Quakers host the Brown Bruins in Philadelphia’s Franklin Field, hoping to bounce back from their loss to Yale (Noon).  Yale hosts the Lions of Columbia in New Haven (11:00).  Finally, the League-leading Big Green of Dartmouth travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to take on Harvard, in a match of conference unbeatens (Noon).  All of those games will be broadcast on ESPN Plus (subscription required).

Enjoy your football this weekend, as the weather turns colder in the Northeast (and in Houston).

Music

When I was in college at Washington & Lee, I became a huge fan of the music we listened and partied and danced to.  Most of it was generically called “W&L Juke”, to intentionally distinguish it from Carolina Beach Music, but we did listen to a lot of beach music and it fell within the big tent of W&L Juke.

This was the late 1970’s, and college students didn’t have the kind of money most seem to have today.  A band party was for special occasions, and so almost all fraternity parties (and down the road parties at the girls’ schools) featured DJ’s, although we didn’t really call them that.  It was always fellow students, and most fraternities had one or two guys who had some good equipment and those guys played tapes.  I was fortunate to become friends with the two guys who led that imitative at the KA house when I was a freshman, Will Hodges and Jimmy Abeloff.  Will had the equipment (great stuff – McIntosh amp and pre-amp, huge Klipsch speakers, etc.).  Jimmy had the cool.  I was soon inviting myself behind the mixing board, learning how to do it.  I got some decent hi-fi equipment, and began making tapes (you bought vinyl albums, then recorded cassette tapes, picking one or two songs off each LP; a very old-fashioned and much more time intensive way of making a playlist than in today’s world).  Will and Jimmy would let me join them, and if one couldn’t make a party, I got to sub in on occasion.  As the years progressed, I started playing tapes with another brother, Mark Shuford, and even later, Townsend Oast.  Those were great times, and it was a great way to enjoy music and go to parties.  Tragically, two of those brothers passed away not long after college.  Jimmy died my first year of law school, and Toast passed away in 1988.

Anyway, as I thought about this week’s game, I decided to spend more time working on a play list of some of my favorite songs from the W&L years.  This week’s collection features mainly songs from Motown, and a few of the great rhythm and blues stars of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

One of my favorite songs, and favorite versions of the song, is Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes were a mainstay, and at one time their lead singer was the great Teddy Pendergrass.  The Love I Lost is probably my favorite song of theirs.

Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose, Too Late to Turn Back Now.

Junior Walker and the All-Stars, from 1969.  What Does it Take?

The Isley Brothers, with This Ole Heart of Mine

All great stuff, but my favorite group from this slice of the genre is The Four Tops.  The Tops were the main male group who benefitted from the extraordinary songwriting of Holland-Dozier-Holland.  Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Lawrence Payton, and Renaldo “Obie” Benson were together for over four decades, from 1953 until 1997.  Two of my favorites, especially the first one.

Reach Out (I’ll Be There)

Baby I Need Your Loving

This last song was definitely not W&L Juke, and a far cry from Detroit and Philadelphia.  But it was one of Jimmy Abeloff’s favorites, and I don’t think a party went by without this getting some playtime.  Eagles, with Take it Easy

Boy Scouts of America

Next Wednesday night, my friend and one of Austin’s great civic leaders, Clarke Heidrick will receive the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Capitol Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  He joins an illustrious group that includes Admiral William McRaven, Gary Farmer, John Sharp, DeLoss Dodds, Tim Crowley, Bill Powers, and David Roche.

You can find a link here to make a donation to help the Scouts and help honor Clarke.

Have a great week.  Love your family and friends, and remember that these games we watch each Saturday are just that. Games.

After listening to Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, it occurred to me go read Romans Chapter 8 again.  Worth a few minutes for you now, and I will make it easy for you:
