Good Morning Longhorn Fans!
Holy Cal! What a game!
What a great effort by the Texas Longhorns at Los Angeles Memorial Stadium Saturday evening. The Horns came out and played with passion and hustle, unfazed by the pageantry of Southern Cal Trojan football.
Despite miscue after mistake, Sam Ehlinger and the Texas offense scrapped and fought the whole game, capped in regulation by a (technically) 91 yard drive on 14 plays in 45 seconds, overcoming a false start which pushed the Horns back to the 2 yard line at the beginning of the drive (we moved the ball 98 yards in less than a minute against the number 4 team in the country). Ehlinger converted a 4th and 1 at the Texas 28 with his feet, only to see another false start by the beleaguered Texas line. But on second and 15, Ehlinger connected with Collin Johnson for 47 yards. The Texas section was going crazy. Three incomplete passes, and that euphoria became high quality stress. For the fans. Not for Number 11. On fourth and ten, Ehlinger hit Foreman for 11 yards, and 2 plays later, the duo connected for a 17 yard touchdown. Really good pass and catch. Texas had the 17-14 point lead with under 40 seconds to play. Hugs, high fives, and yes, some tears for the Burnt Orange Nation.
Unfortunately, USC’s Heisman candidate decided to get Heisman-like in the last 40 seconds, and Sam Darnold drove the Trojans to the Texas 13. As time expired, Chase McGrath tied the game.
To tell you the truth, even as we headed into overtime, I felt good about a Texas win. And it is also true that even though the Longhorns came up short, I feel good about the Texas team. No, not good about a loss, but good about a team who showed us a glimpse of the future under Tom Herman.
84,714 fans watched two of the storied programs in college football square off in what almost all pundits predicted would be a Trojans win. Not all, of course. Except for 49 seconds, 10 at the end of the second quarter and 39 seconds at the end of the fourth, the Texas defense was magnificent. Texas opened the game with a fourth down stop at the Texas 37. The next Texas possession ended when we went for it on fourth and 2 at the USC 17. The Trojans appeared to take advantage of Texas passing on the points, as they quickly drove to the Texas 10, getting a first and goal at the 4 yard line. For the first time in a long time (it seems to me), Texas had a truly outstanding goal line stand. 10 minutes into the game, the 2017 Texas Longhorns defense displayed who I think they are and will be: a really good, confident, and hard-hitting defense. Wheeler, Elliott, Hill, Jefferson, and others all played hard and hit hard. Leading tacklers: Wheeler (12, 5 solo), Jefferson (11/9), Elliott (7/5, plus the 2 interceptions for 62 yards and a score, and a tackle for loss and 2 breakups; he was Big XII Defensive Player of the Week), Hill (7/3), Jones (7/7), and Hughes (5/3).
So defense gets a solid A- for the game. Best Texas defensive performance I have seen in a couple of years. I am guessing last one that was this good (against a quality team) was the win over the Land Thieves in 2015. Two of Southern Cal’s first four drives started in Texas territory (after a pick [which could have been especially disheartening, when you consider it came after the sensational goal line stand] and a fumble [after the USC drive had started at the Texas 34, and went 5 yards backwards]), and the defense held. Huge not to give up points on turnovers, especially when their offense had such good field position. Overall (and this looks much better in the abstract), the Texas defense did this before overtime: turnover on downs, turnover on downs, punt, missed FG, punt, punt, TD, interception, TD, downs, punt, punt, interception, punt, field goal. Those great SC running backs were held in check – Jones got 47, Carr had 28, and Vavae Malepeai had 8. Our run defense was attacking and good. We had another defensive score, as DeShon Elliott tied the game in the second quarter with a 38 yard pick 6. It was a huge play, both on the scoreboard and momentum on the field.
Unfortunately, a couple of blown coverages and a couple of great plays by Darnold and his receivers resulted in 397 yards passing. 56 of those yards (14%) came as time expired in the first half. 52 yards (13%) on the final drive in regulation. 25 yards on the first play of overtime. So a third of USC’s passing yards on 3 drives, a total of five passes. The good news? That is probably fixable. And after seeing the improvement since the Maryland game, I think Texas gets that fixed. We better, before we see Baker Mayfield and Mason Rudolph and Nic Shimonek.
Offense is still a work in progress, but Collin Johnson gets an A+. What a game, with 191 yards receiving on 7 catches, several of which were crucial catches. The opening drive featured a great 48 yard pass to Collin Johnson (remember, it would have been first down on the USC 15), but Texas backed up to the SC 25 on an illegal block. Ehlinger was the other offensive star. 21 for 40, 298 yards, 2 scores, 51 yards gained (sacked for 41, so he only has 10 yards in the book; and Sam’s 51 was out of a total of 109 yards gained against the then #109 rush defense in the country; our 68 net moved the Trojans up to #90). As to the rest of the offense, well, not a ton of good news. Foreman had some great catches. The loss of Connor hurt bad. But consider how much we were hampered by unforced errors: The two turnovers in the first quarter. A drive following the first USC score which featured a false start and 3 consecutive sacks. A first down at the USC 11 negated by an illegal formation penalty. A really bad personal foul on Duvernay, and two plays later a successful fake punt called back for a holding call. Those two calls were truly costly, but in defense of our guys, I thought the refs were atrocious. And that was watching it live, a long way from the field. I felt the same after watching a couple of replays, maybe more so. The interception by Marvell Tell III when we were driving really hurt. A few bad snaps. All of that, and we still nearly won the game.
Special teams were better. The two kicks fielded by RHM so close to the end zone really hurt us, but that is fixable. The rest of our special teams play was pretty good.
I don’t mean to dwell on the negative waves [Moriarty], but just observing that turnovers and penalties were determinative, in my mind. Assuming Coach Herman can fix those issues and knit together a complete offensive line and get them to execute, we might win 6 or 7 more games. A big challenge. In one interview or presser earlier this week, Coach Herman said he’s got 5 guys for the offense line that he feels good about putting out on the field. That’s not enough, and so let’s hope that some guys step up and are ready to play next week.
Congrats to Coach Herman and the players and staff. A very impressive performance on the road in a big, big game. The obvious improvement in the last couple of weeks gives me great hope about the coaches and the players.
Final thought about the game: After we sang the Eyes and the players headed toward the other end of the field to exit, as they got there and started heading into the tunnel, the Southern Cal fans gave the Longhorns a standing ovation. So classy, and very much appreciated. Let’s remember that on September 15, 2018.
Texas Longhorns in Southern California
It was an exceptionally nice weekend in Los Angeles. The weather was great, there were Longhorns everywhere. Walking around Beverly Hills you heard “Hook Em” at every turn. Mastro’s and the bars at the Montage, Peninsula, and Beverly Wilshire full of Horns fans. And there were various groups meeting out there, including the Chancellor’s Council Executive Committee. Congrats to Wallace Smith on a very successful year at the helm, and welcome to Johnny Rathmell. Two great guys leading a great group of Texans.
Among the big news of the weekend, the announcement of the Wofford Denius UTLA Center for Entertainment and Media Studies. The Moody College of Communications (best in the country) has run a program in LA for students to learn and work, and this will expand that program. Students from McCombs and the College of Fine Arts can also attend. Thanks to Woffie and the Cain Foundation. Hard to imagine where The University of Texas would be without the philanthropy of the Denius family.

And the turnout at the game was really impressive. I am guessing 9,000 to 10,000 fans at the Coliseum. Loud, passionate, and friendly. I may be under in my estimate. Looking at the Google Pixel panorama, we might have been closer to 12,000. Whatever the real count was, it was impressive. From MM and VY on the sidelines to President Fenves, Chancellor McRaven, and Governor Abbott in the stands. Really, really cool. I was so proud of Texas and proud to be a Longhorn. It was a magnificent sight. That is, once we got in the stadium. I have been lucky to go to some pretty great sporting events at venues ranging from the Rose Bowl to Lambeau Field to Wrigley to the Cotton Bowl to House Park, and fortunate to attend Final Fours, NBA Finals, and World Series, and last Saturday was by far the singular worse entry experience in my life. Never seen anything that bad. But that is my only criticism. The pregame festivities were excellent. Special thanks to Libby and Art Jacobson for welcoming all the Longhorns at Kamikaze Korner. Look forward to hosting Libby and Art and their Trojan friends at Juan Heisman next year. When we are going to be ranked in the top 10 and make a statement win in the third game of the season to move into the top 5.
My big misses: Buechele didn’t start, or even play. We didn’t see nearly as much Jerrod Heard as I had expected, and my prediction of lots of Chris Warren III and 128 yards is a mysterious miss. I really think he’s one of those backs that has to get the ball 25 times a game, and he gets going after 8 or 10 carries. Just my hypothesis.

Sean Adams
Some of you know Sean Adams. A great sports journalist here in Austin, he covered the Longhorns and lots of other sports. He and Chip Brown had a great show on 1300 AM the Zone, and if you followed him on social media you know he was much more than a sports reporter. He was a thinker (always with good thought for the day) who had a big heart and vision about how to live a good life. When we landed at LAX Thursday and I powered up the phone, I quickly checked email and texts, and then popped open Twitter. The first tweet I saw was Brian Davis (Statesman): “The entire Austin media family is stunned to learn about the passing of Sean Adams, a true positive light in this world. Simply devastating.” Sean was 46. He leaves behind his wife Karen, and two children, Damon and Alex. I cannot do his legacy justice, but other, better writers can:

Big 12 – Week 4
Great weekend for the conference as most of the teams start conference play.
West Virginia goes to Lawrence in order to start Big 12 play undefeated. 11:00 a.m., ESPNU, and I am surprised there is a line. Mountaineers by 21.5, and the over/under is 71. Take West Virginia and the under. I don’t think Holgo will run the score up over 70.
Texas Technical in Houston to play Major Applewhite and his Cougars. 11:00 a.m. on ABC/ESPN2 (ABC around these parts I assume). Sand aggies are road dogs, 6 points, and the over/under is 71. Take Tech (because of Kliffie) and the over (because of Eric).
GREAT game in Stillwater. No. 16 Texas Christian and No. 6 Oklahoma State on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. Both 3-0, both very good, and both deserving of their ranking. Cowboys favored by 13, and the over/under is 71.5. This could be a shoot-out, or it could be a blow-out. If betting, take the Pokes.
No. 3 Oklahoma in Waco. 5:30 p.m. on FS1. Land Thieves favored by 27.5 over Baylor, and Over/Under is 63. Not sure what Vegas is seeing, but I see Baker Mayfield with that flag in the middle of McLane Stadium and a scoreboard that says the odds makers were wrong on both counts.
This Week in College Football
Last night, No. 21 South Florida had Temple at home. Reminiscent of 70 A.D., the Bulls destroyed Temple 13 to 7.
Also Friday night, No. 23 Utah opens Pac 12 play in Tucson against the Wildcats. Utes undefeated (and thus ranked), and Rich Rod looking to get an early win in the P12 South. Utah favored by 3.5 Utes with wins over North Dakota, Brigham Young, and San Jose State. Arizona with wins over Northern Arizona and UTEP, and a loss to Major Applewhite and Houston. I think Arizona gets this one.
Saturday:
No. 10 Ohio State gets UNLV at home, 11:00 a.m. on BTN. Buckeyes favored by 40. UNLV lost to Howard 43-40 to open the season, then a big win over the Vandals of Idaho. 44-16. Still, the Buckeyes ATS record isn’t that great, if memory serves. I think The Ohio State University wins by 38. No cover.
Hard to believe the Seminoles have only played one game, and lost it. But still ranked #12 as the Wolfpack attacks Tallahassee. Florida State favored by 12.5, but I think it will be closer.
No. 19 Louisvile back in Papa John’s with Kent State. 11:00 a.m. on ACC Network. Cardinals favored by 44. Good luck Kent State.

No. 5 Southern Cal at California may be the best game outside of the Big 12 this weekend. Golden Bears are undefeated, the Trojans are worried that they may not be as big and solid as they thought they were (get it?). USC favored by 17, the o/u is 43, and I think that both of those are low. Going to be a close game, at least until half way through the fourth quarter. 2:30 p.m. on ABC.
Toledo at No. 14 Miami (FL). Canes favored by 13.5. This game made me google the MAC conference commissioner and the conference. Huge digression here, but some fans may want to read this.
So, 7 or 8 years ago, more or less, just guessing, ESPN started carrying MAC conference game on Tuesday nights. Being somewhat of a college football fan, I watched some of some or a lot of those games. I got to know the Zips and the Chippewas and Golden Flashes and Redskins Redhawks. And the towns whose names resonated with different eras – Akron, Kent (1960’s), Ypsilanti and Kalamazoo (Glenn Miller). Ohio University, founded 1804, and Miami founded 1809 (why can’t they be just Miami, since they were founded 116 years before [technically, it is a little more complicated] Miami (FL)!?) [Editorial note: from here on out, since I really don’t like Miami (of Florida), and Jimmy U is one of my favorite people in the world, just “Miami” is Miami University, based in Oxford, Ohio. “Miami (FL)” is the school some call “the U” and I now call “Miami (FL)”] {Additional Note: I have used almost all basic punctuation marks on the QWERTY keyboard now that I have a semicolon; I might have had a cocktail or two when I was writing this part of the email.} Miami is the school referred to as the “Cradle of Coaches”, as the men who have coached Miami include Paul Brown, Woody Hayes, Bill Arnsparger, George Little, Weeb Ewbank, Sid Gillman, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, Jim Tressel, Ron Zook, John Harbaugh, Dick Tomey, Sean Payton, and Sean McVay. Anyway, back to the MAC.
The MAC has 12 schools with an aggregate population of nearly 290,000 students. Largest schools have around 30,000 (SUNY Buffalo and Kent State), and the smallest has around 18,800. By comparison, the Big 12 has 10 schools, with about 280,000 students (Texas biggest with over 50,000; Texas Christian the smallest with around 10,500). And how many of you knew that Old Dominion (Norfolk, VA) is an affiliate member of the Big 12 for Women’s rowing? Also Alabama and Tennessee. College athletics is fascinating.
Why all this? Because I think the MAC and other good “mid-major” conferences (especially the American) may get a big windfall as the media landscape changes, and the non-traditional providers compete with FOX and Disney for content. Thus, the large number of games we have seen 3 weeks into the 2017 season with MAC teams on the road to play Power 5 schools. No fear, just a desire to compete. And they get good athletes (Central Michigan hung with USC week one). And when you go compete for a quarter of the season with the big boys, you improve recruiting. So pay attention to the MAC. Next few years will be interesting.

No. 8 Michigan heads to West Lafayette to play Purdue. 3:00 p.m. on FOX. Boilermakers 10 point dogs at home. Over at 51.5. I think the Wolverines get this one, but Purdue is better they used to be.
In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day which was this week, No. 18 Washington State gets un-winned Nevada at home in Pullman. Leach and the Cougars 28 point favorites. Take Wazzu. O/U is 67.8
Big SEC battle between the hedges. No. 17 Mississippi State at No. 11 Georgia. Both undefeated, both playing good football. Georgia Bulldogs favored by 4.5, and O/U is 48.5. 6:00 p.m. on ESPN. Should be a good game, but think State will cover and maybe win.
No. 22 San Diego State at Air Force. Off their big win over Leland Stanford Junior University, the Aztecs look to stay perfect and are 3 point favorites. O/U is 47. 6:00 p.m. on CBSSN.
Syracuse in Red Stick to play the Bayou Bengals. No. 25 Louisiana State coming off a tough loss to Mississippi State and looking to regain their footing. A night game at Tiger Stadium is just the right thing. LSU favored by 21, and O/U is 56. 6:00 p.m. on ESPN2. Louisiana State should win.
Iowa at home against No. 4 Penn State, 6:30 p.m. on ABC. PSU 12.5 point favorites. Go Hawkeyes.
No. 15 Auburn on the road to Missouri. 6:30 p.m. on ESPN. Auburn favored by 18, and O/u is 60. War Eagle!
No. 20 Florida at Kentucky. Gators 1-1 and Wildcats undefeated at 3-0. Florida a narrow 1.5 point favorite (opened at 4). O/U is 44.
Good late night games, with No. 7 Washington in Boulder. 9:00 p.m. on FS1. Buffaloes and the Huskies undefeated. Washington favored by 11.5, and the O/U is 50. Take Colorado and the points.
Also at 9:00 p.m., the No. 24 Ducks in the desert to play 1-2 Arizona State. Oregon favored by 14.5, and the O/U is 75.5.

Huge game in East Lansing. Notre Dame versus the Spartans. 7:00 p.m. on FOX. Irish favored by 3.5. O/U is 54. Should be a good game, and I think Notre Dame gets the win on a last minute score.
The Cavaliers head way west to Idaho. Virginia and Boise State play on the smurf turf tonight (Friday) at 7:00 p.m. on the Deuce. Broncos favored by 13 over the Hoos (o/u 51.5). Sorry Parker and Weppy and all my Jeffersonian friends, but I think Boise wins and covers.

Miami opens MAC play against Central Michigan. Chippewas favored by 1, and O/U is 53. Take the RedHawks and the under.
UCLA north to play the Cardinal in a big game. 9:30 p.m. on ESPN. Stanford favored by 7, and the O/U is 58. Hard to predict this one, as both teams had terrible losses last weekend.

Big 12 –Week 3
Oklahoma State put a beating on Pitt, 59-21. Easy cover, and my guess of 57 points wasn’t far off.
Stunner in Nashville, as the Dores upset K State 14-7. Guess that’s why the line was only 4.
Alas, it was a tough match-up for Kansas. Ohio beats the Jayhawks 42-30. Just wait until basketball season!
West Virginia 59-16 over Delaware State. It was 45-10 at halftime.
Iowa State covers the Zips, 41-14.
Baylor should have looked somewhere other than Duke to get a win. 34-20 Blue Devils. Line was 14.

Land Thieves put a beating on Tulane, 56-15. Baker Mayfield nearly made me look smart. He now has 1,046 yards and ten touchdowns.

Ole Miss took at 16-7 lead to the locker room at halftime in Berkeley, but the Golden Bears came out blazing in the second half. Cal scores 10 in the third and 10 in the fourth while shutting out the Rebs. Final: Cal 27, Ole Miss 16.
Texas Agricultural & Mechanical came back in second half to beat the Ragin Cajuns 45-21. Nice. Line was 24. I was close! Good win for the ags.
Washington & Lee Generals
The Generals were also in Los Angeles, and W&L jumped out to a 24-0 lead on the Stags. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps fought back to lose 24-14. CMS had 72 more yards of offense, and they held the Generals to 268 yards rushing. Princeton beat San Diego, 27-17. Nice win for the Tigers.
Yale trounced Lehigh, 56-28.
Brown Bears over the Bryant Bulldogs, 28-23.
Harvard lost to Rhode Island, 10-17.
Columbia is undefeated! 17-14 over Wagner.
Penn 42-24 over Ohio Dominican.
Cornell hurt by the Blue Hens, 41-14.
Dartmouth with a big road win over Stetson, 38-7.

Brown at Harvard, 11:00 a.m.
Penn at Lehigh, 11:30 a.m.
Cornell at Yale, Noon from New Haven. I think Yale gets a big win.

Teddy
A personal note. Last Wednesday afternoon, before we headed west, we had to say goodbye to our family dog, Teddy. Teddy joined our family Christmas of 1999, and he was a beloved and loving dog. For perspective, Claudia was in the 2 year old class at Westminster Presbyterian Day School when Teddy arrived, and a junior at The University when he left. We love you and miss you Bear!
